Solar has been around for a long time. We have two complete solar hot water systems in operation:

• The first system is a SDHW system which heats 65% plus of all our domestic hot water needs, and had been in operation for over three years.

  It includes two solar flat plate panels, piping, and an 80gal storage tank with an internal heat exchanger for the solar loop (which is a small circulating pump that moves the heated glycol from the panels to the storage tank). This is all controlled by a solar controller that works off the temperature of the flat plate solar panels and the storage temperature.

  Hot water then flows from the storage tank into our existing 40gal gas water heater. As it leaves the water heater the temperature sometimes reaches 140F, so we added a mixing valve on the gas heater hot output side and regulate it to 120F.

• The second system is for space heating our home. We are using evacuated tubes because of the higher temperature that the tubes produce (140F to 200F plus range under 40psi in the solar loop), and a 75gal storage tank with an internal heat exchanger for the glycol to remove the heat from the evacuated tubes.

  There is a pump controller and another controller to pump the hot water from the 155gal storage tanks to our hot water coil in the furnace plenum for space heating.
